The Future Project Manager

World is moving at unprecedented speed than ever before. It is expected to see more and more speed in all aspect of our life. Technology is playing major role . Digital and Digitalization is going to be way of our life. Projects cannot be isolated from these changes. Project Management is having impact of these changes. So, it is right to say that Project Managers are also at the center of such changes and are made to adopt these changes to keep pace with the changes around. Going Forward, Project Manager have to pull up their socks to adopt these changes at unprecedented rate or else they will be left behind. Project Manager must learn quickly which can only enhance the project managers effectiveness to deliver project successfully. The adoption to technology will act as enabler to Project Manager in many of the areas. We find, many project managers spend their time in most repetitive, non-critical, non-productive activities and task. They become transactional Project Managers. These Project Managers will not find place in future. With the right selection of technologies and tools, Project Managers can offload such transactional part of project management to such tools and he or she can devote more and more time to critical activities of Project Management.

Going forward some of the key elements on which future Project Manager must focus to remain relevant in future are:

  1. Focus on Purpose of the Project

Project Manager will have to put purpose of the project at the center in every aspect of his actions. All the efforts must lead to the purpose for which the project was started. Generally, Project Manager limit themselves to completing the tasks and activities of the project based on scope and not worried about the purpose of the project. Future Project manager must look beyond and see that purpose of the project is achieved. If the project is completed and purpose is not achieved, the Project is not successful.

  1. People Management

 Project Management is more art than Science. This is very critical in Success of Project. Art part of Project Management deals with People. It is the leadership aspect of Project Management that will become a critical characteristic of the Project Manager. Project Manager can get all aid and tools to perform better. But with everything to support, if he or she is unable to manage people involved in a project, it will be big failure. Project Manager must improve on this and play a leadership role. In coming times, time might come that on a particular period, a critical resource is missing for some time, Project Manager must motivate others to fill in the shoes of missing critical resources and get the Project Moving rather than pressing a delay button. Negotiation, Motivation, Team Building, Communication of Project Manager will play a great role.

 

  1. Mindset to change and learn at unprecedented rate

Project Manager must understand the changes around him happening at rapid speed and must wear a hat of student to learn and improve. If one stop learning, one start dying. This is a critical for survival of Project Manager. He or she must lay hands on what is happening around rather than running away from it.

 

 

  1. Use of Digital Tools

As a Project Manager, it is important to go back and see which are the activities we are spending time on. Identify those non critical, transactional activities and time spent on those activities. Once identification is done, try to

  1. Delegate it
  2. Outsource it
  3. Automate it

 

When it comes to automation, try and use maximum digital tools, which can give real time update and data. We can use digital tools for meetings, MOM, planning, task management, Documentation, Daily plans M&C etc. When it comes to taking decisions, critical follow ups, Stakeholders management, People Management , Project Manager must invest lot of time in.

 

  1. Data Driven Decision

When we have tools on our side, we can use the data to take decision rather than on gut feeling. Taking decision based on data will always get the expected results rather than depending on gut feeling or on emotions. Use the right tools to get right data to take decisions. Data is going to be oil in engines. Oil is important to run any engines. Like wise data will give right perspective to take right decisions.
